SEQUIN APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS

INDVIDUAL SEQUINS:

Stretch suit.  Use a stretcher made of PVC pipe or an embroidery hoop to make your work more portable.

WITH BEADS:

This is the easiest application to learn.  We much prefer to use matching beads instead of clear, so the color of the
sequin is not “diluted” by the reflection from that clear bead.  The difference is noticeable from a distance.

Thread a needle.  “Betweens” (quilting needles) work well.  They are slim and have a nice eye.  We recommend a
single strand of Nymo, Conso, or any brand of nylon home decorating thread.  These are very durable and easy to
work with.  The thread is not seen, so an exact match is not necessary.

Knot the thread and come up from the back of the suit to the spot where you want the center of the first sequin.  Slide
the sequin on, slide on a bead.  Put the needle back through the center of the sequin (NOT the bead).  The bead will
hold the sequin in place.

Come back up through the suit where you want the center of the next sequin.  Repeat.

It is recommended to or put a bit of glue or clear nail polish on all knots:  nylon thread won’t break, but it naturally
untangles which can allow it to wiggle out of its knot.

WITHOUT BEADS:

Use the same thread, needle, and stretcher as the With Bead application.

Come up from the back of the suit where you want the center of the first sequin.  Slide the sequin on the thread.  Go
back through the suit at the edge of the sequin on the side that will be covered by the next sequin.  Come back up at
the edge of the sequin about a third of the way around.  Go back through the center of the sequin.  One is done.

The next sequin will overlap the stitching of the first.  Come up from the back of the suit a small space away (where
the center of the next sequin will go).  Repeat the application.

Each sequin will look like this when applied.  The stitches will mostly be covered by the next sequin.

This application is very fast and stretchable when you get the hang of it.  It makes a beautiful, solid, smooth, and
color-rich area when done.

STRETCH BANDS:

The stretch sequins can be applied very quickly with a sewing machine that has a zigzag stitch as wide as the sequin.

Using a heavy needle, straight stitch through the first three or four sequins.  It is possible to stitch right through the
sequin itself:  it is not necessary to go through the centers of the sequins.  Without cutting thread, switch to a wide,
long zigzag stitch and sew over the sequins.  There is no need to stitch through any of the sequins:  it is not even
advisable.

Do NOT stretch either the sequins or the suit when applying.

When you get to the end, cut the band, and secure the last three or four like you did at the start.

You can hand-stitch these with a whipstitch as long as you secure the ends.
